An Audi Pickup Truck?

Although this is far from confirmation that a new model is on the way, Audi CEO Markus Duesmann commented: “I cannot promise that we will make one, but we are looking into it. In fact, we will present – not too far from now – perhaps something.”

Reported first by Autocar, Duesmann spoke to reporters alongside representatives of the other three brands within the Audi Group – Bentley, Lamborghini and Ducati – ahead of the group’s annual profit report.

His comments suggest that, at the very least, a concept model could be presented.

Should such a vehicle become a reality, it would undoubtedly be built around the Ford Ranger platform, as it forms the basis of the upcoming Volkswagen Amarok. Built in Silverton, South Africa, and equipped with either a 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel or a 3.0-liter V6, rebranding the Volkswagen as its sister brand Audi would be a relatively straightforward task, although upgrading the interior with a bespoke cabin would add significant costs.

There is also the possibility that Audi could use the MEB platform employed by Volkswagen’s electric vehicles to create a lifestyle pickup particularly suited to the American market. This would also allow technology and data to be shared between other members of the Volkswagen Group.

Brazilian design artist Kleber Silva took inspiration from Audi and created a rendering of what such a pickup could look like. Taking design cues from the Q-series SUV range and applying them to the upcoming Ford Ranger, Silva created an elegant and realistic design that could almost have come directly from Ingolstadt.
