Toyota Hilux GR: Inspired by DAKAR

The legendary Toyota Hilux has competed in the Dakar Rally several times over the decades. Until now, the road-going pickup and its racing counterpart have generally remained at opposite ends of the spectrum. With the launch of the Hilux GR Sport, however, these two worlds are coming together.

The Toyota Hilux GR Sport features an updated sporty design, an upgraded interior and revised suspension, delivering a more road-focused driving experience than the standard pickup. The improved suspension promises a more rewarding driving experience, with greater control, sharper responsiveness and increased grip.

The vehicle becomes even more attractive thanks to a range of exclusive exterior and interior design features.

“The Toyota Hilux has a legendary reputation for toughness and reliability. This applies not only to our race vehicle, but also to our production models, including the GR Sport,” explains Nasser Al-Attiyah, Toyota Gazoo Racing driver, multiple Cross-Country Rally World Champion and three-time Dakar winner.

Toyota Hilux GR Sport: Upgraded Suspension

Although the current Hilux already features improved suspension compared with its predecessor, the GR Sport takes things a step further. The model features a dedicated suspension system with monotube dampers and stiffer front springs. According to Toyota, the GR Sport delivers improved handling compared with the standard Hilux.

The monotube design provides a larger piston surface area, resulting in better damping performance, quicker response and improved heat dissipation. It also helps maintain the performance of the oil inside the unit when driving in demanding conditions. The front coil springs have also been stiffened.

According to Toyota, these modifications deliver significant improvements in handling compared with the standard model, including steering response, straight-line performance and overall grip feel.

For those who take their vehicle off-road, the Hilux GR Sport also benefits from an automatic locking differential and “Active Traction Control”.

In terms of design, a black front grille featuring the “G” pattern and a prominent horizontal bar with the classic Toyota logo clearly distinguish the Hilux GR Sport from the standard models in the range.

The vehicle is also equipped with alloy wheels, black exterior mirror caps, side steps and rugged AT (all-terrain) tires.

The interior has not been left untouched either. One of the highlights is the new sports seats, combining suede-style upholstery with synthetic leather.

The Hilux GR Sport will be available in Europe from this summer, although pricing details have not yet been announced.
