Toyota from „Back to the Future“ – now available for sale in Australia

Not only is the film an iconic classic of the 80s, but it is probably also one of the most iconic car movies ever made.

Of course, there are plenty of great 1950s cars on the streets of Hill Valley, California, but the film is so famous for the DeLorean DMC-12, the car that allowed Marty McFly to travel back in time from 1985 to 1955. Those who watched the film series will remember Emmett Brown's famous line: “If you're gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with STYLE?”

But there is another very cool car in the film that people often forget: Marty McFly's Toyota Hilux. When he arrives back in 1985 after returning from 1955, the protagonist discovers that in this improved future, he owns the 4×4 he had admired so sadly at the beginning of the film.

Fortunately, you don't have to travel through time to own a Toyota Hilux this cool. You only have to travel to Australia, where a perfect replica of the film star is for sale: the famous yellow KC lights, a custom bullbar, and even wheels and tires that are identical to those on the film car.

The interior is slightly different – brown in a typical 80s style instead of the grey interior of Marty's truck – and, unlike Marty, it comes from the factory with a rare sunroof.

It also boasts a 3RZ-FE engine producing 112 kW, sourced from a fifth/sixth-generation Hilux, instead of the original 22R-E engine producing 78 kW. Interior modifications include an aftermarket head unit and a UHF radio – you can't have a Hilux without UHF.

This is not the only Back to the Future Hilux replica in Australia: there is another replica in Western Australia, but that one was imported from the US and is left-hand drive. While it may be a more faithful recreation of the film car, it is not particularly practical for the way Australians drive.

Speaking of replicas, Toyota USA paid tribute to the BTFF Hilux in 2016 with its own version, using the Tacoma as the base rather than a Hilux. We still think the 80s Hilux is much cooler.

Even without the connection to the film, this is a valuable Toyota Hilux in its own right. It is an 80s model that looks great and has received a few tasteful modifications. Of course, it is even more valuable to movie fans – and much cooler than a Jurassic Park Jeep or a Love Bug Beetle.

We can even think of arguments that make it cooler than the DeLorean. The vehicle was offered for sale on the Australian market last year for $50,000. A lot… or a little?! 

Fans of the film will certainly appreciate its value differently.
